Voyage vs AI Dungeon: which one fits your style?
Voyage and AI Dungeon are made by the same studio, Latitude, and as of October 30, 2026, every paid Voyage plan includes AI Dungeon at the same tier. The difference is the kind of game. AI Dungeon is an open-ended text adventure: you write anything, and the story runs with it. Voyage builds persistent worlds that behave like an RPG, with characters, quests, and choices that carry consequences. Latitude draws the same line on its own pricing page, where it describes AI Dungeon as closer to a story you craft and Voyage as closer to an adventure you go on.
We build Branching Skies, a mobile AI RPG in the same category. Every price and plan detail below comes from Voyage's pricing page and AI Dungeon's pricing page, both read on October 30, 2026. Check both before you subscribe.
What is the difference between Voyage and AI Dungeon?
The short answer is control against structure. In AI Dungeon you hold the pen. You can jump into fantasy, horror, romance, or anything else, and the AI follows whatever you type.
Voyage gives you a world first. Worlds have characters who feel like people, quests with stakes, and a character sheet, and the game is built around playing a role inside them. Voyage also has Scenarios, its open-ended mode, which Latitude describes as stories with total creative freedom. The center of gravity is different: Voyage leads with worlds, and AI Dungeon leads with the blank page.
Are Voyage and AI Dungeon made by the same company?
Yes. Both are Latitude products, and the two now share a subscription. If you already pay for AI Dungeon, its pricing page says you can try Voyage with starter Usage without changing your membership.
Which is better for open-ended, write-anything play?
AI Dungeon. It was built for this, and Latitude still positions it that way: infinite, open-ended stories where you control everything that happens. Voyage's Scenarios mode overlaps, and the paid plans let you play it as much as you want, but it is one mode in a product built around worlds.
Which is better if you want an RPG with characters and quests?
Voyage. Its worlds are the main event: persistent places with characters, quests, and consequences, and a character sheet you play from. You can build your own world or drop into one someone else made, and you can play with other people in public multiplayer worlds. We wrote about the wider field of what an AI RPG actually is if you want the three main shapes side by side.
How do the free plans compare?
On Voyage, the free plan includes public multiplayer worlds and Scenarios. Solo play runs on a starter balance of Usage, and unlimited solo play is listed as not included. Some accounts get daily top-ups to that balance, and the Usage menu shows when the next one arrives.
AI Dungeon's plan list did not load when we read its pricing page, so we will not guess at its free limits here. Its page does confirm that Voyage public multiplayer is free for everyone without a subscription.
What does a paid plan get you on each?
Voyage lists four paid plans: Journey, Legend, Mythic, and Ultimate. Billed annually, they work out to $11.67, $22.67, $39.67, and $79.17 a month ($140.04, $272.04, $476.04, and $949.99 a year), and monthly billing is also offered. Every paid plan includes unlimited core play, solo worlds, hosting multiplayer worlds, and Scenarios. The tiers differ in weekly premium Usage, which pays for extras such as better story models, voice narration, Studio AI, and custom images. Voice narration comes included on Mythic and Ultimate, with Enhanced Memory on Mythic and Max Memory on Ultimate.
AI Dungeon memberships include a monthly allowance of Credits, which can raise the amount of story the AI considers on certain generators and pay for images. Moving to a Voyage plan swaps that Credit grant for Voyage's Usage model, according to AI Dungeon's pricing page.
How do they handle memory on long campaigns?
Both products sell deeper memory as a paid feature. On Voyage, Enhanced Memory is part of the Mythic plan and Max Memory part of Ultimate; on the two lower plans, enhanced memory is one of the extras paid from weekly Usage. On AI Dungeon, Credits raise how much of the story the AI keeps in view on certain generators.
A common complaint across the category, in the player communities we read, is a campaign that slowly forgets who you met and what you agreed to. If memory is your deciding factor, test it yourself: play long enough to meet a character twice, and see whether the second meeting knows about the first. Our checklist for finding an AI campaign that remembers walks through seven tests like that one.
Which one fits your style?
- You like writing the story yourself, and rules get in your way: AI Dungeon.
- You want to play a character in a world with people, quests, and a sheet: Voyage.
- You want to play with friends: Voyage. Its public multiplayer worlds are free.
- You already pay for AI Dungeon and are curious: try Voyage on starter Usage first. AI Dungeon's page says this does not change your membership.
- You want one world that holds still and remembers you, on your phone: neither is built around that, and that is the game we are making.
If you want a world that was written before you arrived
Voyage and AI Dungeon both generate. AI Dungeon generates the story as you type, and Voyage generates worlds from a description. That gives you endless variety, and it means the world is being invented while you play.
Branching Skies takes the other road. It is a mobile AI RPG set in Syrinway, a world we ran as a homebrew tabletop campaign for close to a decade before writing a line of code. The places, people, prices, and roads are written down before you arrive, and Algus, our narrator, tells the story from them. The free tier is the whole game, and the game remembers the same on every tier. Our honest cons: it is single-player, it has no generated art, its scenes are prose-heavy, and it is not out yet. If those trade-offs suit you, our guide to Voyage alternatives with a curated world compares the hand-built options, and our AI Dungeon alternatives guide covers the rest of the field.
Quick answers
Is AI Dungeon included with a Voyage subscription?
Yes. As of October 30, 2026, Voyage's pricing page says every paid Voyage plan also includes AI Dungeon, with unlimited play at the same tier. AI Dungeon's own pricing page agrees: moving to a Voyage plan adds unlimited AI Dungeon use at your current level. Those plans do not include AI Dungeon's monthly Credit grant.
Can I play Voyage for free?
Partly. The free plan includes public multiplayer worlds and Scenarios, and a starter balance of Usage for solo play and premium features. Unlimited solo play is listed as not included on the free plan. The paid plans add solo worlds with unlimited core play.
Which is better for solo play, Voyage or AI Dungeon?
If you want to write the story and steer every beat, AI Dungeon is built for that. If you want to play a character inside a world with its own people, quests, and a character sheet, Voyage is built for that. On the free plan, solo play in Voyage draws on a starter balance, so try a short session before you decide.
Is there an AI RPG with one hand-built world instead of generated ones?
Yes. Branching Skies, the mobile AI RPG we are building, runs in one world written by hand before you arrive, so the narrator reads from established places and people instead of inventing them. It is not out yet. The early beta list is open on our homepage.
